The Boardwalk Project

The Boardwalk Project is underway — a raised timber walkway that will provide safe access across the wetlands to a glow worm dell and a future sunset viewing platform.

Work is currently underway on the boardwalk.

The wetlands between the treehouse and the main lodge hold water through much of the year, and access across this area has always required care. Rather than cutting tracks through soft ground, the decision was made to construct a raised timber boardwalk — protecting the wetland while improving year-round accessibility.

Like much of the infrastructure at Te Aka, the boardwalk is being designed and built by Dave.

From the treehouse structure and bunkhouse to the driveway upgrades, sauna, walkways and ongoing property improvements, Dave has been the driving force behind the physical build of Te Aka. His background in construction and design carries through every project — practical, considered and built for West Coast conditions.

The boardwalk continues that approach.

Once complete, it will guide guests safely across the lower part of the property and through native bush to the far side.

There, a small glow worm dell sits in a naturally damp, sheltered pocket of forest track. The conditions here support bioluminescent glow worms, and the new access will allow guests to experience this area without disturbing the surrounding habitat.

The longer-term plan includes a simple raised platform at the middle of the walkway. From this vantage point, there are 360 degree views including west toward the Paparoa Range. On clear evenings, the sun drops behind these maunga, and once darkness settles, the southern sky opens fully overhead.

Nelson Creek has minimal light pollution. The stars are sharp and uninterrupted.

The boardwalk is about expanding connection across the property — linking wetlands, forest, glow worms and sky — while ensuring the land beneath it remains protected.
