The Te Aka Gardens

The Te Aka gardens — including a glasshouse, herb beds, fruit trees and vegetable plots — support the retreat’s focus on fresh, seasonal and homegrown produce.

The gardens at Te Aka have grown alongside the treehouse.

What began as a few practical plantings has developed into a working garden that supports both the household and guest experience. A glasshouse was built to extend the growing season and provide a protected space for seedlings and more delicate crops.

Herb beds sit close to the house for easy access — fresh rosemary, thyme, parsley and seasonal greens available to use in everyday cooking. Fruit trees have been planted with the long view in mind, knowing they take time to establish but will provide for years to come.

The vegetable garden produces a rotating selection of seasonal produce. What grows depends on the time of year, but the intention remains consistent — fresh, simple, local.

The gardens also feed directly into the meal offerings available to guests. When ordering a meal kit, many of the vegetables come straight from these beds. It keeps things seasonal and reduces reliance on transported produce.

Like the forest, the garden requires ongoing work. Planting. Pruning. Protecting from pests. Preparing soil.

It’s not ornamental.

It’s productive.

And it’s another way Te Aka stays connected to the land it sits on.
